Concern over child safety at home

The government has announced it is to give parents safety gates, cushions and bath mats to protect their children from accidents at home.

Funding to the tune of £18 million has been handed to the Royal Society for The Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) to run the "safe at home" scheme.

RoSPA officials will visit homes to assess a family's needs and then provide them with equipment and practical home safety advice.

Families could be given everything from safety gates and fireguards to window locks, corner cushions or a non-slip bath mat.

Ministers said the money had been set aside after parents said they were unable to afford basic equipment to keep their children safe.

The Department for Children, Schools and Families said the scheme will be targeted at the most disadvantaged families in areas across England.

Children's minister Delyth Morgan said: "We know that accidents in the home are the biggest cause of injury to children under five, and that over one million children of all ages visit hospital every year because of an accident at home. These statistics are worrying, which is why we are targeting £18 million of support to the 141 areas where we can make the most difference."
